Reliability Overhaul - Our Latest Product Updates

The complete update on how Nobl9’s new features enable proactive and holistic reliability management

You may have noticed the buzz from our social channels last week about all the new product improvements. It was most certainly the busiest I can remember spanning the previous months. To make sense of the chaos, we wanted to give our general community a little insight into the backend of building the platform, covering where we have been, what’s happening now, and where we see it going - with an explanation of how and why the new features help with managing complex software.

SLO Details 2.0

The primary interface of the Nobl9 Platform, the SLO details page, is the most transformative shift in the features we released last week. Since the launch of Annotations, custom alerting features, and Composite SLOs,  there was some crowding of the page. Based on feedback from our customer Zalando, we redesigned the page to add structure to SLOs and reduce noise. We're pleased to report that the new interface has received excellent feedback from Zalando and our other customers, significantly enhancing the overall user experience of our platform.

The SLO Details 2.0 page now offers a cleaner, more organized view, making it easier to manage and monitor service-level objectives. By decluttering the interface and providing a more intuitive layout, users can quickly access critical information and make informed decisions. The integration of annotations and custom alerting features allows for a more tailored monitoring experience, helping teams stay on top of their SLOs without being overwhelmed by unnecessary data.

If you’re interested in learning more about the change and how it came to be, you can follow up by reading our SLO Details 2.0 Blog. If you want a closer look at the backend of how it all works, our documentation explains all that.

Highly Customizable Alerting Updates

Using our product internally, we identified a need to enhance our alerting capabilities for better visibility into high-priority alerts. We began by redesigning our Alert Details View to integrate alert details with the SLI charts that triggered them, making it easier to investigate each alert. With our customizable alerting features, you can ensure that the on-call team is paged only when absolutely necessary. We also introduced the Multi-Window Multi-Burn Rate Alert Condition, which provides timely alerts for both rapid error spikes and gradual error budget burns.

Our new alerting features emerged from our own experiences with alert fatigue, particularly due to our daily feature releases. The small iteration sizes often resulted in unactionable alerts, failing to provide the team with valuable insights. To address this, we redesigned the Alert Details View and added new alert conditions. Through this process, we also gained valuable insights into our own alert fatigue. Adam Szymański even wrote a case study on our journey, which you can explore here.

The customizable alerting features allow you to tailor the alerting system to your specific needs, reducing noise and ensuring that only the most critical alerts are sent to your team. This flexibility helps to minimize alert fatigue and improve response times, ultimately enhancing the reliability of your services. If you’re struggling with alert fatigue, or your engineers are overwhelmed by their on-call responsibilities, this is a great perk that’s worth exploring.

Enhanced User Experience and Community Feedback

One of the key drivers behind these updates was the feedback we received from our users. Our community has always been at the heart of our development process, and we continuously strive to incorporate their insights and suggestions into our product. The positive feedback we’ve received on the new SLO Details 2.0 page and the customizable alerting features has been incredibly encouraging, and it validates the direction we’re taking with our platform.

Looking Ahead

Our recent updates are another positive step in building the most effective way to manage complex software development and deployment. We are committed to continually improving our platform to meet the evolving needs of our users. Future enhancements will focus on further refining the user experience and providing even more robust tools for proactive reliability management.

Stay tuned to our blog and social channels for the latest updates and insights. If you have any feedback or suggestions, we’d love to hear from you as we continue to build and improve the Nobl9 platform.
